Like in the movie "Up," stories have been circulating for years of enterprising souls who attached a ton of helium balloons to something and floated up into the atmosphere. The Balloon Boy hoax of a few years ago was a fake-out, but in 1982 a Los Angeles man actually achieved liftoff. Larry Walters attached 45 weather balloons to a lawn chair and flew so high he interfered with air traffic. He was trying to make it to the Mojave Desert, but when he got too high he decided to pop some balloons and come down, only to be immediately arrested.
