COLORADO: The many legends of Riverdale Road

Riverdale Road is the site of not one, but eight creepy stories. Ranging from a Hell Gate, to ghosts of slaves hanging from the trees, the stretch of road is decidedly spooky. 

The creepiest story, though, is that of the phantom jogger. One day, there was a driver who hit a jogger, freaked out, and left him for dead. Now, it's said that if you park at the site of the crash, you'll hear disembodied footsteps getting closer and closer to your car. People have reported hand prints on their windows and banging noises as if someone was kicking the outside.

CALIFORNIA: The Char-Man

The Char-Man's origin story is gruesome — a father and son were both caught in a house fire and horribly burnt in 1948. After the fire, the son became so mentally unstable that he flayed and hung his father. When the police found the son, he was so unrecognizably burnt they didn't realize he was alive, so he ran away before they were able to arrest him for the murder of his father.

Ever since then, the Char-Man is still spotted wandering the woods surrounding Ojai, occasionally approaching tents of innocent campers, or pretending to be a hitchhiker and then attempting to attack them.

ARKANSAS: The Boggy Creek Monster

The Boggy Creek Monster of Fouke is Arkansas' version of Sasquatch. He's commonly accepted to be around seven or eight feet tall and covered in hair. Legend says that he roams the creeks of rural Arkansas. He was first spotted in 1834, when people reported seeing a "wild man." 

It's also known as the Fouke Monster.

People still claim to spot the Boggy Creek Monster today, and he has been the subject of five feature length films including 1972's "The Legend of Boggy Creek."

Everyone knows the story of the Bermuda Triangle, but you might not know about the Alaskan Triangle. On average, 5 of every 1,000 people go missing in Alaska according to the LA Times, so even if there's nothing supernatural going on, it's easy to get lost in the Alaskan wilderness.

The Tlingit tribe that lives in Juneau has their own explanation for the high amount of missing people — evil spirits called the Kushtaka. The Kushtaka are shape-shifters (half-man, half-otter) that lure women and children to water with fake cries in order to steal their human spirit — and drown them.

ARIZONA: The ghosts of Slaughterhouse Canyon

The story of Slaughterhouse Canyon takes place during the Gold Rush. During the 1800s, there was a family who lived down in the canyon. They were very poor, so the father would venture out into the canyon for food for his family. As you might have guessed, one day the father did not return, so his family slowly starved and descended into madness. The mother, unable to bear listening to her children's cries anymore, put on her wedding dress, murdered her children, and then threw them into a nearby river. The next day she succumbed to starvation herself.

The legend states that if you go down to Slaughterhouse Canyon at night, even now, you will hear the loud, anguished cries of the mother who lost her mind.

ALABAMA: Hell's Gate Bridge

There are two legends associated with Hell's Gate Bridge — one, that if you drive your car out to the middle of the bridge and turn off the lights, the couple will magically appear in your car and leave a wet spot on the seat. The other, which is how the bridge got its name, is the belief that if you drive over the bridge and look over your shoulder halfway through, the scenery behind you turns into a portal to hell engulfed in flames.

Potentially to curb ghost hunters and bored teenagers, Hell's Gate Bridge is closed to cars, and in such disrepair that walking across is strongly discouraged.

THE 3RD FLOOR BOARDING HOUSE 2

This is a continuation of my story "The 3rd floor boarding house". I was not able to include it since it was already a long story.

Anyway, as mentioned, there were 5 rooms in the 3rd floor, one of the room was mine which was located near the stairs.

This happened after the landlord had the 3rd floor baptized. We thought that "uncle" will be gone but we were wrong.

I had a boyfriend that time (let's call him Bryan). It was his rest day and he slept over at my room while I was at work. He slept over because he told me that he will continue to watch the movie that was uploaded on my laptop.

My gay friends used to call my room as a "nursery" because aside from it had so many stickers/designs of Winnie the Pooh, it also had a lot of pillows which had a Winnie the Pooh pillow cases too. My curtains was Pooh, my bed sheet, blanket, name it!. Also, it had a built-in wood closet that was located near the foot of the bed. The wood that was used was clearly an expensive wood and was painted with baby pink. It doesn't have any torn or any sharp edges.

This is my first time to write this true to life story so I hope all readers will enjoy.

I am working in a BPO industry (call center) here in Davao City. Since I am not originally from Davao, we looked for a boarding house just a few blocks from the office. I was with my friends that were not Davao-born too. Luckily, we found a boarding house that was just newly built, 3rd floor and has 5 rooms. It was actually a 3rd floor of the owner's house. The first floor was their dining room, small variety store (sari2x store), while at the 2nd floor was their 2-3 rooms.

Our boarding house's entrance was different from the owner's entrance. Their main door was beside the stairs where we used to reach the 3rd floor. So it was a good thing especially for us callcenter agents not to disturb the landlord/landlady because we do not have fixed schedule, we can go in and out even if it is very late at night or dawn.

As mentioned, the 3rd floor has 5 rooms. Me and my 4 friends who are gays, yes, I was the only pure girl. They are gays but not totally cross-dresser. We understood each other because we were on the same province and our language too.

She Walks The Roof

It was one of the nights when my mama is staying up late waiting for my papa to come home. My papa works from 2pm sometimes up until 1am the following day. By the way I work from 2pm until 10pm but I am usually home by 11pm.

My mama cannot sleep unless we are all complete. This one night, my papa was assigned in an operation from his job which requires them to render over time hours of work. It was quarter to 2am already. Mama stayed by the window. The night was peaceful. Until such time that she thought she saw a lady in white gown (seems like a night gown) walking at the top of our neighbor's roof. You see, when looking by the window, all we can see are roofs of our neighbors' houses. She thought that maybe her eyes were just tricking her. But, after many minutes, the apparition was still there walking on the roof. She found it weird. Who in her sane mind would walk on the roof at the wee hour of the night? But then, she just shrugged and still waited for my papa. After barely 30 minutes later, my papa arrived. The next day, when my mama was cleaning our backyard, she heard two of our old neighbors talking to each other. Their topic? It was a lady that was seen walking on the roof at the wee hour of the night for 3 days straight that time. So, when my mama saw that lady it was actually the 3rd day she was seen walking there. Mama, being curious with the topic and by what she saw the other night, joined the conversation. Since Lola Siony's house is nearer to that neighbor's roof where the lady was seen, she clearly saw that it was actually the mother of our neighbor (owner of that house). You think there's nothing wrong with that? I thought so too. But, the thing is, that neighbor's mother is already bedridden due to terminal illness and they said that they're actually waiting for the time she will be joining our Father in Heaven. The Okiku Doll

This is a real case. Okiku had a doll that wore a kimono and she was the girl's inseparable friend. But one day Okiku died of cold and his spirit returned, possessing the toy. Now Okiku's doll hair grows and no one has an explanation for it. It is stored in the Mannenji Temple in Japan.

Before being possessed, the doll had short hair. But over time, it has grown and is now long. No one knows how hair continues to grow, but scientific studies have concluded that hair is a child's. Maybe Okiku.

Kiyotaki Tunnel

This tunnel was built in 1927 and is haunted by workers who died there as slaves while building it. It has 444 meters (it is known that the number 4 is cursed for the Orientals, as the number 13 is for the westerners), however, its size may vary depending on whether you measured it in the morning or at night.

People report that ghosts can be seen in this tunnel at night. They can even get in the car and scare people, causing fatal accidents. There is also a mirror in the tunnel and if you look at it and see a ghost you will suffer a horrible death.

Inunaki Village

This is a mysterious village that is totally isolated from other Japanese villages. Even the Japanese have difficulty finding it, which raises some doubt as to whether it really exists. The chilling history behind Malabon’s demonic tombstone.

Don Simeon Bernardo didn’t believe in God. He wanted everybody to know about it, so much so that he built a hair-raising monument of a devil triumphing over an angel. This sculpture now guards the tomb of Don Simeon who died of heart attack in 1934 at the age of 65. Since then, the now-famous tombstone in Tugatog, Malabon has been the subject of a lot of legends perpetuated by people who never even knew its real origins.

It only took an interview with one of Don Simeon’s surviving children to figure out the history behind the bizarre tombstone. In a traumatizing episode (at least for me) of the ’90s TV show Magandang Gabi Bayan, Atty. Sumilang Bernardo said that her father was a victim of Spanish oppression. Accused of being a revolutionary, Don Bernardo was arrested by the Guardia Civil and subjected to unimaginable punishments like forcing him to drink a pail of water containing human excreta.
One day, Don Bernardo realized he’s had enough. He turned his back on the Catholic religion that had completely penetrated the Filipino society. For him, the good didn’t exist in the world anymore and the Catholic religion was a mere tool of the colonizers to put the Philippines under its control.
Aside from creating the now-infamous statue, Don Bernardo also made all his 10 children promise to never believe in God. Out of these 10, only three remained atheists–including Atty. Sumilang–while the rest converted to Roman Catholicism upon marriage.

SHADOW PEOPLE

People from around the world have written to our site about something they have seen that they can only best describe as, “Shadow People”. This implies that the person or entity that appears shadowlike is not solid but exactly what a shadow is; dark, transparent and fleeting.

I was mulling over Shadow People for awhile and was startled when I again saw a reference to it on a ghost show on TV. Based on the circumstances surrounding shadow people in this instance, it appears that they are spirits that cannot move on to the other side. Hitobashira

If you are in Japan, be very careful walking down a street late at night. You can receive the visit of Kushisake Onna, whose name means "the woman with the mouth divided". And a suggestion: do not try to run away from it, because she may not like it very much and teleport in front of you. Anyway, it's not going to look really cool for you. She shows up wearing a surgical mask and a coat and then asks, "Am I pretty?" If you say no, she'll cut your head off with a large pair of scissors that she carries. If you say yes, then she takes off the mask, revealing her mouth cut from ear to ear.
